ASUS Releases VivoBook 14 (X420UA): Inexpensive Ultra-Portable with Premium Look & Feel
ASUS has introduced its latest mainstream VivoBook 14 laptop, with the new model in some ways bringing the series a bit closer to its premium counterparts. The new VivoBook 14 (X420UA) comes in an aluminum unibody, features a 14-inch display, and runs up to Intel’s fully-fledged quad-core Core i7 processor. Meanwhile, the mobile PC is still aimed at the the mainstream market unwilling to spend a fortune on a notebook. Originally launched as inexpensive alternative to more advanced laptops, VivoBooks have been evolving and gaining features from higher-end models in a bid to be more viable in the highly-competitive market of mainstream notebooks aimed at the younger audience. The VivoBook 14 (X420UA) makes another step in the direction of premium laptops with its aluminum unibody chassis featuring a 17.7 mm z-height, a 1.4 kg weight, and narrow 5.7-mm NanoEdge display bezels that have allowed ASUS to install a 14-inch anti-glare Full-HD IPS LCD into a very portable body. Inside, the ASUS VivoBook 14 houses Intel’s 8th Gen Core i3/i5/i7 processor with two or four cores and the company's UHD Graphics 620 iGPU. This is paired with up to 8 GB of LPDDR3-2133 onboard memory and an M.2 SATA SSD featuring capacities of up to 512 GB. The laptop is outfitted with a 38-Wh Li-Polymer battery that is rated for up to 11 hours, depending on the workload. On the wireless sides of things, the notebook is equipped with a 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.2 module. As for physical connectors, it has a USB 3.0 Type-C port, two USB Type-A ports (3.0 and 2.0), an HDMI output, a microSD card slot, a TRRS audio jack, and an AC power adapter plug. The system also has a chicklet keyboard (with optional backlighting), a fingerprint reader, an HD webcam, 2W stereo speakers with SonicMaster enhancements, and a microphone array. Keeping in mind all the advantages the new machine has, make no mistake because the new VivoBook 14 is still not quite a lower-speced ZenBook. It is thicker than higher-end 14-inch machines, it has a lower-capacity battery. Besides, some VivoBook 14 configurations will be equipped with cheap TN LCD panels featuring a 1366×768 resolution, 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage as well as Windows 10 S, all in a bid to compete for the low-end of the market while offering a premium look and feel. ASUS has not announced MSRPs of its new VivoBook 14 machines, but considering that there will be multiple configs based on vastly diverse hardware, expect prices of different models to vary greatly.

NEC Launches Narrow Bezel MultiSync EA271U Display: 4K & USB-C Charging
NEC has released a new 27-inch performance mainstream monitor aimed at business and enterprise customers that are after a 4K display with modern USB Type-C connectivity. The MultiSync EA271U monitor offers rather typical specs for an LCD of this class, but adds some additional features to cut down power consumption of the device, which may appeal to certain companies. The NEC MultiSync EA271U is a 27-inch IPS monitor that offers a 3840×2160 resolution, 350 nits brightness, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 178° viewing angles, a 60 Hz refresh rate, and a 5 ms response time. While the LCD is aimed at typical business and enterprise workloads, it's still a 10-bit panel and can reproduce 1.07. billion colors, a rare feature for products of this class. As for color gamut, it covers 100% of the sRGB color space, 78.1% of the AdobeRGB gamut, and 75.1% of NTSC. One of the prime features of the MultiSync EA271U are its thin 1-mm bezels that enable users to build near-seamless dual or multi-display configurations. Meanwhile the monitor is supported by NEC’s ControlSync software that enables easy setup of up to six displays. Two other interesting features that the NEC MultiSync EA271U monitor offers are ambient light and human presence sensors, which can adjust brightness depending on ambient lighting or switch to power saving mode if the user leaves. Since many companies are trying to cut down their power consumption and “go green”, the said capabilities may actually sell the product to the target audience. When it comes to connectivity, NEC’s monitor for business and enterprise clients features a DisplayPort 1.2 input, two HDMI ports, and a USB Type-C input with DP alt mode support. The latter can deliver up to 60 W of power to connected laptop, which is enough for typical 13.3-inch machines. In addition, the display has a triple-port USB 3.0 Type-A hub, built-in speakers, audio jacks, and an adjustable stand. NEC’s MultiSync EA271U-BK display is now available directly from the company for $699. For those who need color accuracy, NEC also offers display calibration tools and even a display hood.

Telford Homes reveals ‘work to do’ to hit profit targets amid Brexit worries
Housebuilder Telford Homes has warned it still has “work to do” to meet its full-year profit targets and said Brexit has added further uncertainty to its ability to hit forecasts. The London-focused group said it has just under 60 house sales to achieve, of which 20 are priced above £600,000 – the price bracket that has been hardest hit by Brexit worries. While this is down from 90 homes left to sell in October, the group is concerned over buyer demand amid mounting uncertainty about Brexit. Telford said that, as sales currently stand, it is on track for profits of at least £40 million for the full year. Chief executive Jon Di-Stefano said: “We still have work to do in order to achieve our original target of exceeding £50 million of total profit before tax for the year to 31 March 2019 and Brexit brings a certain amount of unpredictability to that.” He added: “The uncertainty arising from Brexit, and indeed the wider political situation, remains a concern across the sector, making it difficult to accurately predict sales rates over the coming months.” In a sign of the caution affecting the London market, the group said its recent “off-plan” launch at Gallions Point in E16 was disappointing, with only 15 sales secured. It said the performance was “suppressed by Brexit worries and the potential risk of increased stamp duty for overseas investors”. The comments came as Telford reported a 16.1% rise in pre-tax profits to £10.1 million for the six months to September 30. It expects results to be weighted towards the second half of its financial year. Revenues rose 31% to £129.6 million in the first half. The developer has been shifting its focus to the rental sector, arguing that there is significant support for build-to-rent developments from politicians and investors.
